I just did this tonight. My tub drain has been clogged from some fish gravel accidentally sneaking past me when cleaning my son’s turtle tank. I was at a loss. It wasn’t budging when I tried to plunge it and I thought I was going to have to pay a hefty price to fix this. I can’t use the store drain clearers because my landlord has a rule not to.
Then, I realized I could make a chemical reaction of my own safely! With simple cleaning vinegar and baking soda, I cleared out my drain and washed it all down with boiling water!

what you’ll need:
1/2 cup baking soda
1 cup vinegar
1 gallon boiling water
How to kick that clog’s booty:
Carefully pour the baking soda down the drain. I had to push some into the drain with my fingers. Pour in 1/2 of the vinegar, covering the hole with a drain plug so the fizzing power is forced down, not up (omit this for toilets).
Add the second half of the vinegar, following the same steps. Allow to sit for 15-20 minutes, and then flush with the entire gallon of boiling water.
I have heard that you shouldn’t use store bought drain cleaners after doing this if this doesn’t work. Not sure if that’s true, but I wouldn’t risk it.
